H. E. Mr. Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Offices and other International Organizations in Geneva belongs to the 1988 batch of Bangladesh Foreign Service.

Prior to his appointment as Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Offices and other International Organizations in Geneva, he was Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji from 2017-2022, Bangladesh Ambassador to Myanmar from 2014-2017 and Bangladesh High Commissioner to Sri Lanka from 2012-2014.

In about a three-decade long career as a diplomat, he served as Deputy High Commissioner at Bangladesh High Commission in Islamabad from 2008-2009 and as Director at the SAARC Secretariat from 2004-2007. He was Counsellor at Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva from 1999-2002 and First Secretary at Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi from 1995-1999.

H. E. Sufiur Rahman did numerous domestic assignments in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in his capacity as Director General (SAARC) and Director General (Economic Affairs) from 2010-2012. While serving in these positions, he was assigned with specific tasks of holding/preparing for Colombo Process Ministerial Meeting-2011, SAARC Summit, UN-LDC-IV Conference-2011, Autism Conference-2011, Climate Vulnerable Forum-2011, World Marketing Summit-2012, UNFCCC/COP, UNCTAD XIII and Rio+20 Conference.

He attended a number of UNGA sessions, conferences/meetings of World Health Organization, ILO, United Nations Compensation Commission, WIPO, IOM, Conference on Disarmament etc.


In Myanmar, he was intimately associated with managing the fall out of violence in Rakhine in 2016/2017 and was part of intricate negotiations on the development of framework for the return of refugees/forcibly displaced persons.

H. E. Mohammad Sufiur Rahman holds an MBA from the Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University and a B.SC in Civil Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). He attended courses at NESA Centre and National Defence University, Washington DC in 2003 and 2014 respectively.

He is married to Mrs. Shamsia Rahman and blessed with two daughters and a son.
